Expanding Broadband Accessibility in Utah

Expanding Broadband Accessibility in Utah’s Most Populated Areas

Traffic Control Projects, January 3, 2025

AWP Safety has unmatched expertise and capabilities to support major broadband expansions that enhance customer choice and broadband speeds throughout North America. The company is currently delivering comprehensive worksite safety and community protection for a major long-term project in and around Salt Lake City.

Challenge

Complex traffic control across multiple cities

Comcast is investing more than $138 million over the next three years to significantly expand its next-generation Xfinity network across north-central Utah. B. Jackson, a Utah-based infrastructure construction services provider, is supporting the project by installing 400+ miles of new fiber optic cable. The upgrade will deliver multi-gigabit speeds for customers in and around Salt Lake City – including Lehi, Taylorsville, and West Jordan.

The project includes locating underground utilities, taking depth measurements, and trenching and burying conduit for the fiber build. Detailed traffic control plans and lane and shoulder closures are required along I-15 – a major freeway that passes through most of Utah’s largest population centers. Due to the scope of the project, traffic planning and execution must be coordinated with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and safety officials in several municipalities.

Solution

A trusted partner for traffic control expertise and execution

B. Jackson selected AWP Safety as its preferred traffic control partner due to its robust traffic solutions portfolio, unmatched safety expertise and exceptional customer service. “We’ve built a trusted relationship with B. Jackson on previous projects, and they’ve told us that AWP Safety provides the best customer service in the area, hands down,” says Dylan Haslam, AWP Safety’s area manager in Utah.

According to Haslam, his team ramped up for the project in just three months, ensuring that staffing levels could support B. Jackson’s ongoing needs in addition to regular operations. “We also purchased additional equipment to have on hand to meet additional project requirements,” he adds.

AWP Safety has already leveraged its relationship with UDOT and its traffic control planning expertise to ensure worksite compliance at scale. “Since we’re moving through multiple cities under UDOT’s jurisdiction, we are engaged in a unique level of communication with them and have drawn up hundreds of pages of traffic control plans to secure proper permits for B. Jackson,” explains Haslam.

Services delivered include:

  • Daily deployment of four crews to provide worksite setups across multiple locations, including miles of freeway shoulder closures
  • Acquisition and set-up of 400 drums, 100 signs and stands, and four arrow boards to alert motorists of changing road conditions
  • Deployment of night crews to manage double lane closures

Results
  • Streamlined permit approvals. AWP Safety turns around traffic control plans in 24 to 48 hours, hastening permit approval and helping B. Jackson stay on schedule.
  • Enhanced customer and community safety. Thoughtful traffic control planning and compliant work zones are keeping customer crews and motorists safe during the broadband expansion.
  • A trusted partnership. B. Jackson has requested additional quotes from AWP Safety to support upcoming broadband expansions in Colorado.
