EHS Team Spotlight: What Does Safety Mean to You?
At AWP Safety, safety is at the core of what we do – day in and day out. That’s why the AWP Safety Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Team works diligently to ensure integration and standardization of top-performing safety practices across our company.
In observance of National Work Zone Awareness Week, we asked some of our EHS Team members, to share their thoughts on safety, and what “safety” means to them.
Carlos Lantigua – Director of Fleet and Driver Safety, California
Q: What does Safety mean to you?
It means taking the time to recognize hazards and taking steps to protect our team members, family and friends. It means always leading by example.
Q: Why is your role important to the overall safety of the organization?
Changing driver behavior through coaching and training is vital to our organization’s success and my role as a leader in safety and traffic control.
Marco Devarez – EHS MAnager, New York
Q: What does Safety mean to you?
Safety to me is synonymous with integrity. It’s doing the right thing while no one is looking.
Q: Why is your role important to the overall safety of the organization?
Being able to interact with frontline employees gives me an opportunity to both learn and coach. That constant feedback loop is integral to a safe and learning culture.
Cory SMith – EHS Manager, Texas
Q: What does Safety mean to you?
Ensuring everyone gets home the same way they came to work, teaching the importance of why we do the things we do, and why it is so important to them, the customers, and the general public.
Q: How can you help improve safety?
We are the experts. As we are in the field, we train, educate and coach. The more time we spend in the field, the better everyone performs.
Chris Berisko – EHS Supervisor, Ohio
Q: What does Safety mean to you?
Safety is making sure everyone, and all our equipment, goes home everyday the same way they came. It’s staying accident, injury and incident-free.
Q: Why is your role important to the overall safety of the organization?
My role as EHS Supervisor is important because I walk with the field to communicate and demonstrate safety compliance so everyone is working on the same page.
Justin Usher – EHS Manager, CAnada
Q: What does Safety mean to you?
Doing what is right, not what is easy, to protect people, property and the environment.
Q: Why is your role important to the overall safety of the organization?
I tie in the field coaching and supporting staff at all levels to ensure best practice are being used.
